After visiting a mall on a weekend, I lost my Blackberry! The loss of phone and the data in it was as horrifying as the process of trying to track my phone. Talked to the service provider and I was informed that the police can do it. Filed and FIR with police and requested to track the phone and apt came the reply, “this is not my job”! After being in the IT industry for the last 15 years, I know this is possible and it is only the will of the service provider and the police which does not allow you to get your phone tracked, once stolen or you have lost it somewhere! This service only gets activated and the phone is tracked only in the event of some untoward incident.

While thinking on this, I came to a very simple solution, which if implemented, shall almost stop the stealing of the phone!

We all know that all mobile phone has a unique IMEI number and the number gets registered with the service provider, once the phone gets activated. TRAI or any other central agency could initiate a website where the buyer of any phone has an option of getting his handset registered providing the IMEI number and other details. This shall be shared with all the service providers. As soon as the phone gets stolen or is lost, the user/ buyer can report the loss of his phone on the same website and the IMEI number comes under the “watch-list” category and is further shared with all the service providers. Since the IMEI number is under “watch” or is rendered un-usable by all service providers, as soon as the other user, who either have bought the stolen phone or have got it from somewhere, tries to use the phone, the phone shall never get activated and renders the phone useless. This shall be a deterrant to both the buyer of the stolen phone and the thief, and the phone becomes just a piece of art!

Hope this gets implemented and stealing of the phone becomes a useless profession!

    Dear sir/Madam,
I had lost my mobile on the 04th of Decmber at Chennai. It
was stolen by someone while I was travelling in bus heading from CHROMEPET to GUINDY. I had sent a mail to cyberacchennai@sify.com and when I approached the Cybercrime Cell in Egmore they said they will proceed with the enquiry, but no reply till date. It was in last NOVEMBER that I purchased this set. It is not the monetary value that I have lost but a lot of my personal informations that can never be retrieved. Many
valuable messages that I had saved to the set, many important dates
saved in the calender, many important notes… I lost everything. ((

I had been to Chennai to visit my friend
in Chennai. I was there for 4 days, it was then that I lost my mobile.
Please inform me if you get to know of anything about my set.
